Catalog Description

The focus of the AAS in Health and Wellness Promotion (HWP) is to empower students to help others through prevention of illness, injury, and disease by effective application of principles and practices of population health, wellness promotion, fitness enrichment, and performance enhancement. It also provides an opportunity for various health career certificate-seeking students to continue their education in a general health studies capacity and earn an Associate's degree. Successful completion of this program will prepare students for advanced certifications through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and other governing associations.

REQUIRED SPECIALTY OPTION COURSES & ELECTIVES

For the A.A.S. in HWP, students are to complete 25 credits of a required courses and electives within their specialty option (Exercise Science, Health & Wellness Coaching, or Massage Therapy). When it is stated “or other elective” the suggested elective is listed, however, many other electives may count towards this requirement. Please see department chair, Joana Pabedinskas, for more information.

Once the program has been completed, students should be able to:

Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities as set forth by the respective national governing bodies (ACSM, NSCA, NBHWC, AHA, ASEP) to function as capable, competent entry-level professionals within the health and wellness promotion professions.

Describe the traditional and contemporary health continua and the roles that health and wellness promotion professionals play within these systems.

Describe the role of preventive health and wellness measures in enhancing the quality of life of all those served.

Formulate an individualized approach to securing viable employment as a health and wellness professional.

Majority of the courses that comprise the Massage Therapy Certificate feed directly into the A.A.S. in HWP: Massage Therapy option.

For the MAS Certificate and to be eligible to earn licensure as a massage therapist, MAS 119 and MAS 235 are required courses; for the A.A.S. in HWP: Massage Therapy option they are recommended.
