Catalog Description

The Automotive Collision Repair – Refinishing Technician Specialty degree prepares students for entry-level employment as professional automotive refinish technicians in the collision repair industry. The program emphasizes the knowledge, technical skills, and safety practices required to refinish modern vehicles to manufacturer and industry standards. Students develop foundational skills in surface preparation, corrosion protection, masking, spray gun operation, color theory, paint mixing, and the application of primers, basecoats, and clearcoats. Coursework also includes instruction in defect identification and correction, detailing, and final finish quality control. Emphasis is placed on proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), environmental compliance, and safe handling of hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA and EPA guidelines.

Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory experience in a fully equipped refinishing environment, students gain practical experience using current industry tools, spray equipment, and paint systems. Training aligns with industry standards and prepares students to pursue professional certifications and employment in collision repair facilities, dealerships, and specialty refinishing shops. This specialty degree is designed for students seeking focused training in refinishing while maintaining a strong foundation in overall collision repair principles, making graduates versatile and employable across multiple areas of the automotive collision industry.

To complete an A.A.S., students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic Success Advisor to identify coursework that will meet degree requirements.


Once the program has been completed, students should be able to:

1. Follow safety, environmental, and workplace regulations related to refinishing operations.

2. Perform proper vehicle cleaning, surface preparation, and masking procedures for refinishing the vehicle.

3. Operate and maintain refinishing equipment.

4. Interpret technical data sheets and manufacturer refinish procedures.

5. Mix, match, and apply automotive coatings using manufacturer-recommended techniques.

6. Identify and correct common paint defects and finish imperfections

7. Evaluate completed refinish work.

8. Demonstrate professionalism, workflow efficiency, and quality control practices expected in a modern collision repair facility.
