Catalog Description

This certificate is intended for current teachers, native or non-native speakers, who wish to expand their professional opportunities and to enhance their teaching skills by adding a TESOL certificate to their portfolio and for college graduates and/or first time teachers interested in teaching English in a non-English speaking country; as well as for professionals interested in applying their skills in the field of English language teaching.

Once the program has been completed, students should be able to:

Plan lessons that adopt instructional strategies and assessment methods tailored to multilingual learners in diverse educational settings, in alignment with TESOL Standards and the Illinois English New Language Standards.

Apply prominent learning theories and second language acquisition theories to design effective, student-centered language instruction that reflects the principles of both TESOL Standards and the Illinois English New Language Standards.

Implement culturally responsive teaching practices to foster inclusive learning environments that affirm students’ linguistic and cultural identities, consistent with TESOL Standards and the Illinois English New Language Standards.
