Certificate Requirements

To receive the Nurse Assisting Certificate of Course Completion, and be eligible to take the Illinois Nurse Aide Competency Exam to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), a student must receive a minimum grade of “C” in the following course, meet attendance requirements, and demonstrate competency in all nurse assisting skills.

This program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), 525 West Jefferson, Springfield, IL 62761, www.idph.state.il.us. To successfully complete the course, students must satisfy the state required hours of attendance. Students who fail to meet the state required hours of class and clinical attendance will not be allowed to continue in the course. Students MUST OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW THEMSELVES from the course by the refund date listed in the current class schedule in order to cancel their financial obligations.

The State of Illinois Health Care Worker Background Check Act of 1995 requires a fingerprint criminal background check on all individuals registering for the program.

Students with disqualifying convictions will not be allowed to register. Disqualifying convictions can be viewed at www.idph.state.il.us/nar.

Prerequisites

Have a valid social security number.
Meet the minimum age requirement (16 years old).
Submit an application to the College of Lake County.
Meet the Reading Requirement.
Complete a fingerprint criminal background check.
Complete a urine drug screen with negative results.
Complete the Health Requirements.

Note: CNA certification is a prerequisite for the Associate in Applied Science Nursing Program. While many nurse assisting students continue on to become nurses, others pursue careers in a variety of other healthcare fields.
