Course Description

This course will survey East Asian history from the ancient period to 1800, with emphasis on Chinese and Japanese civilizations. It will explore the development of the Chinese and Japanese cultures and religious/philosophical traditions. It will examine the making of the Chinese bureaucratic state and aristocratic hierarchy. It will also look at the economic development of China in East Asia and the broader world. It will also examine the establishment of Japanese Shogunate and feudal society. Lastly, it will examine the role of Korea and Vietnam in East Asia as is applicable.
