Catalog Description

The CNC Setup Technician certificate prepares students for employment and job advancement working in high-tech manufacturing environments. The certificate provides applied skills in the operation and preparation of manual and Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machines for current and future needs of the manufacturing industry. The courses are designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to get started as a CNC machine operator, manual machinist or CNC machinist. The coursework will provide continued studies on basic manual mills and lathes, CNC machine operation, machine and shop safety, fundamental machining processes, interpreting blueprints and inspection & measuring techniques. Setup procedures common to CNC machines such as mills, lathes. Machinists already employed in the field will find this certificate a great way to improve their skill set to advance to the setup level. The Precision Machining Technology program is accredited by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) and national credentialing is available. Upon completion of certain courses, students will be prepared to take credentialing exams for an additional fee.

Once the program has been completed, students should be able to:

1. Read and interpret mechanical drawings

2. Manage tool selection based on job demands

3. Prepare cutting tool and machine shop calculations

4. Setup and operate Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools

5. Program Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools

6. Demonstrate semi-precision and precision measuring techniques

7. Make machine adjustments to produce components that meet print specifications

8. React to common machining problems and adjust processes and equipment

9. Demonstrate a quality mindset throughout all machining operations
