Catalog Description

The Automotive Refinishing Technician Certificate prepares students for entry-level employment as automotive refinishing technicians. The program emphasizes safe, industry-standard practices for vehicle surface preparation, paint application, and finish repair. Coursework provides instruction in surface preparation, masking, color matching, paint mixing, and the application of undercoats, topcoats, and tri-coat finishes. Students also gain hands-on experience with defect identification, corrective techniques, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and refinishing tools and equipment.

Through classroom and laboratory instruction, students develop the technical proficiency and professional habits required to produce high-quality vehicle finishes in collision repair facilities, dealerships, and specialty refinishing shops.

Once the program has been completed, students should be able to:

1. Follow safety, environmental, and workplace regulations related to collision repair operations.

2. Prepare vehicle surfaces for refinishing, including cleaning, sanding, and masking to ensure proper adhesion and finish quality.

3. Locate vehicle paint codes on vehicle and refinish mixing systems.

4. Mix and apply automotive coatings, including undercoats, topcoats, and tri-coat finishes, following manufacturer and industry guidelines.

5. Identify and correct common finish defects.

6. Operate and maintain refinishing equipment and tools.
