Course Description

This course traces the historical development of photography as an art form from 1839 to the present. Discussions will begin with the pre-history of the camera obscura through the discoveries of the inventors of photography as an art form. Discussions will include critical analysis of types of photographs and aesthetic movements in photography. Multicultural/intercultural aspects, as well as contributions of women to the photographic arts, will be discussed. Contributions of photography to the other arts also will be included.Note: A museum visit will be required during the semester at student expense. See course syllabus for approximate cost.
